Alcohol Damages the Gut, May Lead to Cancer
Alcohol can damage various parts of the digestive system, specifically the small and large intestines, and is a “significant” risk factor for gastrointestinal diseases, according to a recent research review. It can also increase the risk of certain cancers, including gastric and colorectal cancers.
The review drew on research from previous studies and highlighted the mechanism by which alcohol can damage the gut. In essence, the ethanol in alcohol is converted to a carcinogenic substance known as acetaldehyde, which can damage various parts of the body before being expelled.
“The gastrointestinal tract is in contact with the highest amount of ethanol and its metabolites during alcohol consumption,” said Dr. Luca Maccioni, first study author. “Extremely high concentrations of ethanol and its metabolites significantly increase the risk of gastrointestinal diseases and cancers.”
Digestive disorders stemming from alcohol– sometimes referred to as alcohol-associated bowel disease– and related cancers are mostly associated with excessive alcohol consumption. However, even moderate amounts of alcohol can negatively affect gut bacteria, the liver, and more, suggesting that light drinking or avoidance is best.
Turmeric Compound Found Comparable to Common Med for Indigestion
Curcumin, one of the main active compounds in turmeric, may be just as effective for indigestion as a common conventional medicine known as omeprazole, a new study has found. When compared side by side, both improved pain and other symptoms to a very similar extent.
Omeprazole is a type of drug known as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) and is commonly used to treat stomach and esophagus problems (including acid reflux and stomach ulcers). It works mainly by decreasing the amount of acid produced by the stomach.
In the study, 206 adult participants with chronic upset stomach– known as functional dyspepsia– were divided into three groups: one that took omeprazole, one that took curcumin (500 mg, 4 times daily), and one that took a combination of the two.
Both the curcumin and the omeprazole groups experienced remarkably similar improvements in their symptoms with no serious side effects noted. Interestingly, combining curcumin and omeprazole did not result in any greater improvements than using either one separately.

7 Health Benefits of Pineapple, Including a Skin-Helping Enzyme
Pineapple is loaded with nutrients (more than most people realize!), including vitamin C, B vitamins, manganese, fiber, and a variety of other essential minerals. It also contains an enzyme known as bromelain, which is thought to aid digestion AND has shown an ability to help skin and tissues heal. Bromelain and other compounds in pineapple combat inflammation as well, making this fruit a top choice for a post-workout snack and potentially for people with osteoarthritis. (More)
Pregnant Women Exposed to Air Pollution Give Birth to Smaller Babies
Research documenting the negative health effects of air pollution keeps accumulating, and a recent study has now found that pregnant women exposed to air pollutants are more likely to give birth to smaller babies. This is significant because low birthweight children often have a higher risk of asthma and other chronic lung issues as they get older. Some positive news is that moving to a greener area– when possible– helps counteract the effects of air pollution during pregnancy. (More)
Toxic Compounds Linger in the Air After Cooking, Cleaning
Cooking and cleaning are both common household activities that release potentially harmful airborne chemicals, including the carcinogens benzene and formaldehyde. Cooking, especially, releases toxic compounds that are similar to some identified in wildfire smoke, and contributes to indoor air pollution levels that are often several times higher than outdoor pollution levels. Venting your home regularly (through fans or windows) is a good way to help clear these compounds out. (More)
The Ideal “Nap Strategy” for Staying Up All Night
Ideally, you should be sleeping all night and getting the recommended 7-9 hours of rest. But if for some reason you have to be up most of the night, researchers have found an effective “nap strategy” to help counteract fatigue and keep you more alert. Essentially, this strategy involves taking a longish 90-minute nap followed by a short 30-minute nap sometime later. This was found to be better than a single 120-minute nap, which made participants feel more sluggish. (More)
10 Worst and 3 Best Foods for Joint Pain
If you struggle with arthritis or a related type of joint issue, reducing the inflammation present in your body can be key to lower pain levels. For this reason, you might want to consider limiting or avoiding inflammatory foods like refined carbs, added sugars, fried foods, processed meats, and alcohol. Some people are also sensitive to nightshades (eggplant, tomatoes, white potatoes, etc.), dairy, or gluten. Fatty fish rich in omega 3s, fruits, and veggies are all top foods for lowering inflammation. (More)

The human spine is highly complex and made up of 33 individual bones (vertebrae), 23 intervertebral disks, and a few hundred muscles, joints, and ligaments. With all these moving parts, it’s really no wonder that up to 80% of Americans will suffer back pain at some point.
